Celtic appear to be plotting more signings before the end of the January transfer window. With Ange Postecoglou’s side seemingly looking for a new striker, Cho Gue-Sung has been heavily linked with a move to Parkhead in recent times. But the race to sign the South Korean World Cup sensation is not going to be simple.
Cho came on the radar of many clubs following his heroics in the 2022 World Cup. He netted two goals from four matches, helping guide his national team to the Round of 16. His overall play earned a lot of plaudits as well.
The race to sign Cho seems to have come down to two clubs at this point of time, Celtic and Minnesota United of MLS.
Suggestions have been that Celtic are ready put in a €3 million offer plus a 50 percent sell-on clause up to €6 million. On the other hand, Minnesota United are believed to be willing to shell out a €5 million transfer fee plus a 30 percent sell-on clause as well. The Scottish giants seem to have one advantage over the American club to sign Cho though.
Cho’s comments hand one advantage to Celtic over Minnesota United
Speaking to Naver, and as reported by the Daily Record, Cho talked about his desire to play in Europe, as he said:
"“I’m contemplating the timing of a European transfer while talking and communicating with director Park Ji-sung and coach Kim Sang-shik. I’ve seen many articles, but I haven’t heard anything concrete yet.“Not only me, but any player will have the same desire to go to Europe as soon as a good opportunity comes. It can be improved. Considering all aspects, we are thinking about how to do it most effectively.“There are players who have to advance now within the team regarding the timing of the transfer, and there are players who have to prepare for the season together with the squad in the summer. They are all so different.“In the end, I think that if you are a player, you set your final goal and go. All players will want to go to the EPL.”"
That is exactly where Celtic have an advantage over Minnesota United in the race to sign Cho. They can offer the South Korean striker top level European football, perhaps even a chance to play against the best of the best in the Champions League.
And the path to the Premier League is much easier through Celtic Park, than it would be through the MLS.
If Celtic continue to push forward with their plan to land the player, seeing Cho don the Hoops in the future might be very possible.
