It is well known that Celtic have been very active in the transfer market with J League clubs since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou as manager, signing six players from the Japanese top flight over the past 18 months. But there’s now a sensational new twist appearing that will come as a surprise to most Hoops fans.
It looks like we could see another transfer move involving Celtic and the J League emerge. But this time, it would see a player moving from Glasgow to Japan.
There have been plenty of rumours already about Greek striker Giorgos Giakoumakis being unhappy with his lack of starts and it is believed that he failed to agree to new terms with the club as well.
All signs have pointed towards Giakoumakis heading towards the exit door this month. But not many could have predicted him potentially moving to Japan.
Celtic striker being linked with a move to Japanese club
As reported by Sports Hochi, Urawa Red Diamonds are moving to acquire Giakoumakis of Celtic. The offer has already been presented and negotiations are reaching the final stage.
With the J1 League new season starting in mid-February, a move away could potentially happen quickly to allow time for the player to settle into his new club and adjust with his new teammates.
Giakoumakis underlined his value on Saturday against Kilmarnock after again coming on as a second half substitute. He made a great impact and was unlucky in hitting the woodwork and not adding to his tally of goals for the season.
Giakoumakis would certainly be missed at Celtic if this move does go ahead, as he played a key part in the Premiership triumph last season. And the club will certainly need to bring in a replacement for him. They have been linked with the likes of Cho Gue-sung, Casper Tengstedt, Said Hamulic and a few others in recent times.
