The January transfer window is in full swing, with Celtic getting linked with a plethora of potential signings. The rumours of Giorgos Giakoumakis looking for a switch over the next few weeks have gone into overdrive recently, as it looks like the Greek striker could be closing in on a move to J League side, Urawa Red Diamonds, if recent rumours are accurate.

Although Giakoumakis’ likely exit is still not official, the Hoops have already been linked with several strikers this month, who could act as a potential replacement for the Greek international. Cho Gue-sung is a name that has done the rounds of the rumour mill constantly.

Cho, currently playing for Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in K League 1, had a brilliant World Cup campaign with the South Korean national team, where the Asian nation went all the way to the round of 16. The striker netted two goals, and earned loads of plaudits for his performances.

Recent suggestions had been that Cho was closing in on a move to Bundesliga club Mainz ahead of Celtic. But it looks like the situation might have changed recently.

Celtic given massive boost in the transfer pursuit of Cho Gue-sung

As reported by Football Scotland, Cho had appeared set for a move to Germany after Mainz submitted a transfer offer believed to be around £2.7 million. However, Celtic have now entered the bidding war themselves by tabling more money for the South Korean striker.

As a result, Mainz could potentially be out of the transfer race following Celtic’s ambitious move for Cho.

Some recent rumours have even suggested that Mainz have withdrawn their interest in the player. That might be timely, considering that the Hoops might have just outbid them for the signature of Cho.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Cho scored 21 goals and provided 5 assists in 35 appearances in the 2022 campaign.
