Celtic have already added three players to their ranks in the January transfer window, in the form of Yuki Kobayashi, Alistair Johnston and Tomoki Iwata. And if rumours are to be believed, then more could be on their way to Parkhead. At the same time though, one would expect some to head for the exit door.
Celtic fans will be hoping that Iwata is able to fill the gap at defensive midfield, that has been there since the departure of Nir Bitton at the end of last season.
Oliver Abildgaard was brought in in the summer on a season-long loan from Rubin Kazan, but the Danish midfielder has failed to make his presence felt in a Celtic jersey. Some rumours have even suggested that his deal could be cut short this month and other clubs have been linked with a potential move, if that was to happen.
One team who appear to hold an interest in Abildgaard is Danish club, Aalborg BK. As reported by Bold (via 67 Hail Hail), their chief executive and caretaking sports director, Thomas Bælum has confirmed the club’s interest in seeing Abildgaard return.
Danish club are interested in signing the struggling Celtic midfielder
It is safe to say that if Iwata is able to make his presence felt at Celtic and prove to be a good signing, then there would not be much of a role left for Abildgaard at the club.
For the time being, he is yet to make a single start for the Hoops and seems to be struggling in Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Is January the right time to let Abildgaard go though, considering the turnaround we saw Giorgos Giakoumakis make in the second half of last season?
It will be very interesting to see what the future holds for Abildgaard at Parkhead, following the arrival of Iwata, as rumours continue to swirl around about the Danish midfielder’s future.
