Celtic have undergone quite the transformation over the past 18 months under the management of Ange Postecoglou. When the Australian had arrived in Glasgow, the Hoops had a paper thin squad and we saw them struggle badly with options in the first half of the 2021/22 season. They have continued to strengthen since then though and now, the roster is pretty stacked.

That also means that there are many players who have struggled for playing time. One such player is Oliver Abildgaard, who arrived on a season-long loan from Rubin Kazan in the summer.

Abildgaard arrived with high expectations surrounding him but has barely played since then. Initially, it was thought that it was lack of fitness that was preventing him from featuring regularly. Half-a-season on, that can no longer be the case though and it just seems that he has failed to impress the manager. Thus, a move away could be on the cards in January.

As reported by bold.dk, Abildgaard’s agent Christian Henriksen said:

"“Due to injury and the situation in Russia, Oliver had not trained with a club before joining Celtic in early September. Now we’ve spent these four months trying to get him back in top shape.“He is at the top of every physical test at Celtic, so we know he is totally fit and now we need to find a place for him to play until the summer because he has to get game time. That is the most important thing.“Everyone knows it’s unsustainable when you don’t play, so we’re looking at what’s going to happen next. Of course, we must find a solution in this window.”"

It is safe to say that Abildgaard is not a major part of Celtic’s plans at this point of time and him leaving in January would not come as a major blow for the club.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has made 9 appearances for the club till now and featured for just 156 minutes of football in total.

It must also be pointed out that Abildgaard is yet to make a single start for Celtic. Thus, it might be best for all parties involved if they part ways in January, especially with the Hoops already bringing in reigning J League MVP, Tomoki Iwata, who can play in defensive midfield.

Thus, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Abildgaard but it is very possible that it could lie away from Celtic Park.
