Most of Celtic’s transfer business during the time of Ange Postecoglou as manager has involved signings, as the Hoops have shown a stunning hunger to relentlessly keep strengthening their squad in every transfer window. Sooner or later, some players are expected to be on their way out as well though. That is just part of the game.
Giorgos Giakoumakis seems to be one player whose future at Celtic is in question, after it is believed that he failed to agree a contract extension with the Hoops.
Giakoumakis has been one of the key parts of Postecoglou’s squad for a long time now and was instrumental in their Premiership triumph last season, with his hot streak in front of goal in the second half of the campaign. The Greek striker has not started a game for a while though and that has only intensified rumours of an exit.
As reported by B.T. (via Glasgow Times), Danish side FC Midtjylland have “approached” Celtic “with a view to sign” Giakoumakis.
Unexpected club make contact to sign Celtic player
Rumours had linked Giakoumakis with a move to England, Germany, Italy and potentially even the Middle East. Thus, it is safe to say that not many would have expected FC Midtjylland to make a move for the Greek striker.
It is not hard to understand why. Giakoumakis is believed to have failed to agree to new terms with Celtic. And the Danish league is not known for big contracts.
Of course, Celtic fans will be very familiar with FC Midtjylland, having faced them in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds in recent times, as well as the fact that Erik Sviatchenko plays there.
Could Giakoumakis end up at FC Midtjylland as well? Let’s see what the future holds. It does feel unlikely but never say never in football.
