Cho Gue-sung is a player whose name has been linked with a move to Celtic in recent times. The Hoops have already signed five players from the J-League since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou as manager, in the form of Kyogo, Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda, Yosuke Ideguchi and Yuki Kobayashi. And now, it looks like they have turned their eyes towards the South Korean league as well.

Cho has been a standout there in recent times. He currently plays for Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. According to stats from Transfermarkt, the striker scored 21 goals and provided 5 assists in 35 appearances in the 2021/22 season.

That must have caught the eye of Celtic already, who have spread their scouting net far and wide in recent times. And Cho’s moment in the spotlight came in the World Cup, where he was one of the standout performers. He scored a couple of goals and South Korea made it out of a group that consisted of heavyweights like Portugal, Uruguay and Ghana. They were knocked out from the last 16 by Brazil.

As reported by GIVEMESPORT, journalist Dean Jones said about the rumours involving Celtic and Cho:

"“I think Cho Gue-Sung really does actually fit the type of player I’ve been told to look out for here in terms of a potential signing, and so I think that is a really interesting link.”"

Thus, it looks like Celtic are looking for a striker in January who has a similar profile to that of the South Korean striker.

It must also be pointed out that Giorgos Giakoumakis could potentially be on his way out of Parkhead next month, with rumours suggesting that the club have failed to agree a contract extension with the Greek international.

It remains to be seen if Celtic do end up making a move for Cho or not. There is expected to be plenty of other clubs interested in him as well after the World Cup campaign that he had. Even Borussia Dortmund have been linked with him.
