Cho Gue-sung is a name that Celtic fans will be well aware of by now. The South Korean striker showed what he is capable of at the World Cup, scoring a brace against Ghana and impressing with his overall play in the games in which he did not find the back of the net in. His national team were ultimately knocked out by Brazil in the last 16, but even making that stage was a victory in itself after being placed in a very tough group.

It is not just for the national team that Cho has impressed in recent times either. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 21 goals and provided 5 assists in 35 appearances in the 2021/22 season.

On the other hand, Giorgos Giakoumakis could potentially be headed for a Parkhead exit soon after failing to agree a contract extension with Celtic. Thus, it is not hard to see why the club might try to sign Cho.

As reported by the Daily Record, the striker was quizzed by Korean media after returning from the World Cup, and when asked about interest from Celtic, he responded:

"“I haven’t heard anything about European clubs. However, as a player, I naturally have a dream to go out on the world stage and face world-class players. Entering the European stage has been a dream since I was young. I want to go to any place where I can improve my skills and grow.”"

Cho breaks silence about Celtic transfer rumours

So, while directly not answering about the interest from Celtic, Cho has admitted that he would like to move to Europe in the near future.

This might be the right time in his career to make that move as well. He has been spectacular in the South Korean league in recent times and shown his quality at the World Cup stage as well.

His displays surely would have raised the interest of several clubs around Europe. One would hope that the track record that Celtic have shown in developing players from Asia would work in their favour though, if they do end up entering a race for Cho’s signature.
