Celtic have recently completed the signing of Alistair Johnston from CF Montreal, where he had incidentally played with Victor Wanyama. The Kenyan midfielder is one of the best players that the Hoops have had a hand in discovering in recent years and he did seem to have some great things to say about the club to the Canadian international, before his transfer switch.
Johnston impressed with his performances for the Canadian national team at the World Cup and with Josip Juranovic rumoured to be on his way out in January, it is very possible that he could be the starting right-back for Celtic soon.
Johnston appears to have all the attributes required to be a good fit in Ange Postecoglou’s system. Now, it remains to be seen if he can make the adjustment to the Scottish game. He might not be the only one making the switch from Canada to Scotland though.
As reported by HITC, on one of Johnston’s Instagram photos, Wanyama had commented “Paradise is where you will be playing” to which the Canadian replied “where ‘we’ will be playing”.
Did Johnston drop a hint about Wanyama returning to Celtic in January?
The rumours about Wanyama returning to Celtic have never quite gone away and he has remained a popular figure amongst the fans, while the Kenyan himself has never made a secret about his love for the club, even almost a decade after leaving.
On the other hand, Celtic do appear to have a gap in their squad for the ‘Wanyama role’, with Oliver Abildgaard struggling to make an impact since joining in the summer while the likes of James McCarthy and Yosuke Ideguchi have struggled for minutes as well.
Thus, could Wanyama be set to make a return to Celtic on a free transfer? Or was Johnston only joking?
