Celtic have been linked with a potential move for Cho Gue-sung, after the striker enjoyed an excellent World Cup campaign with the South Korean national team. They made it to the last 16 before being knocked out by Brazil. Overall though, it was a very positive campaign as they made it out of a group that also consisted of Portugal, Ghana and Uruguay.

Individually, Cho had a great time. He scored a brace in the game against Ghana, although South Korea lost that game. And his overall play was excellent as well.

It is not just in South Korean colours that he has been in top form recently though. According to stats from Transfermarkt, Cho scored 21 goals and provided 5 assists in 35 appearances in the 2021/22 season.

As a result, it is no surprise that he is being linked with a move to Europe. Celtic are believed to be interested and have been handed a boost by the fact that the links with Rennes and Fenerbahce have been played down already. And now, there could be some further good news for them.

Celtic handed potential transfer boost by Cho’s father

As reported by the Daily Record, while talking about his son’s future, Cho’s father, Cho Chae-hwan said:

"“The advice I have given my son is when he signs for a team abroad, go to a club that can play the way he likes, rather than choosing a club because they are a big name. He needs a club that will help him adapt and settle down to a new lifestyle on and off the pitch.“I know his agent is in the process of finalising negotiations regarding his transfer overseas. He will certainly go to Europe. Ahead of the World Cup, I told him that this was a tournament that he had to show everyone what he could do on the pitch and I think he did that. He has had a great time at the World Cup and I am certainly very proud of him.”"

Considering all the links and rumours, one would have to believe that Celtic are very much in the mix to sign Cho. Whether they will be able to get a deal done for him or not remains to be seen.

Other clubs in Europe surely must have been impressed with what they saw as well, with even Borussia Dortmund being linked with a potential move for the striker. One can only hope that Celtic will be given an edge by the fact that they have a good track record when it comes to developing players from Asia.
