Celtic might be in need of a striker in the near future after rumours have broken out that the club have failed to agree a contract extension with Giorgos Giakoumakis, and the Greek international could be on his way out of Parkhead in January. Amidst all this, one player that they have been linked with Cho Gue-sung.

Cho has shined at the World Cup for South Korea, as they have made it to the last 16 of the competition. He found the back of the net twice in their game against Ghana, while his overall play has looked impressive throughout.

It is not just at the international level that he has looked impressive either. He has been on top form while representing Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors as well, which earned him his spot in South Korea’s World Cup squad.

Other than Celtic, the likes of Fenerbahce and Rennes have been linked with him as well. But as reported by Kyunghyang Shinmun (via 67 Hail Hail), one of the player’s representatives said:

"“The rumours that these clubs (Fenerbahce and Rennes) are interested in Cho Kyu-sung are not true.”"

Celtic have been handed a boost in the race to sign Cho

Thus, it looks like Celtic will not be facing competition from Fenerbahce and Rennes for the signature of Cho. The fact that the Hoops were not ruled out is a good sign as well.

At the same time though, there are expected to be plenty of other clubs interested in the signature of Cho after the World Cup campaign that he has had. Bundesliga giants, Borussia Dortmund, are a club who are rumoured to be interested and if they did make an attempt to sign him, Celtic would have a tough time bringing him to Glasgow instead.

Let’s see what the future holds for Cho. One thing that is clear is that Celtic could do with another striker, even if Giakoumakis stays beyond this January transfer window, considering how average the Hoops’ finishing has been lately.
