There was a bit of panic amongst Celtic fans when rumours broke out that talks had broken down between the club and Giorgos Giakoumakis over a contract extension, and the Greek striker could potentially end up leaving in January as a result of it. With same claims being made about the future of Josip Juranovic as well, it is safe to say that the situation looked far from ideal.

Giakoumakis has been a key player for Celtic for quite some time now and it was his form in the second half of last season that helped secure the Premiership title.

Thus, it is safe to say that Celtic fans would not want to see Giakoumakis leave the club anytime soon. And there seems to be some great news with regards to his future at Parkhead, as it looks like the situation is not nearly as bad as first feared.

As tweeted out by Anthony Joseph, while talks over an improved deal stalled, it is believed that Giakoumakis is happy at Celtic and both parties still hope to come to an agreement.

Thus, it looks like Giakoumakis’ Celtic exit in January is not inevitable, like many had felt. In fact, there is still a chance that the two parties could reach an agreement over a new deal.

It often feels like Giakoumakis does not get enough credit for how good he has been since joining Celtic. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 25 goals in 50 appearances for the club while just playing 2389 minutes of football in total.

That is a great return for any striker and as a result, one would hope that Giakoumakis remains at Parkhead. The club do have a contract with him till the summer of 2026 and thus, they are in a strong position no matter how extension talks go.
