Celtic find themselves in an unexpected situation right now. Reports have broken out that the club have failed to agree a contract extension with Giorgos Giakoumakis and the Greek striker could be headed out of Parkhead as early as January. It is a nightmare situation, considering his importance to this team and also the fact that Kyogo Furuhashi has not been at his clinical best in recent times.
With a league title to defend, Giakoumakis leaving in the middle of the season would be a huge problem and Celtic will definitely need to bring in a replacement for him.
One player that they have been linked with is South Korean striker, Cho Gue-sung. The 24-year-old recently scored twice for his national team against Ghana at the World Cup, although they went on to lose by a 3-2 scoreline. The Hoops could end up facing tough competition for his signature though.
As reported by the Scottish Daily Express, Borussia Dortmund are in the market for a striker as well and have already sounded out a former player to get the lowdown on Cho.
Celtic handed transfer blow by Borussia Dortmund in race to sign Cho
It is safe to say that if Giakoumakis did end up leaving Celtic in the near future then they would have to bring in a prolific goalscorer to replace him. And Cho might just be the perfect guy to fill in that role, considering his recent record in front of goal.
Whether Celtic can get a deal done or not remains to be seen. The report goes on to state that former South Korean international Lee Young-pyo told CBS radio:
"“After the first game against Uruguay, the technical director of a very good club in Europe contacted me about a scout report for Cho Gue-sung.”"
If Borussia Dortmund do end up making a serious move to sign Cho then it would be very difficult for Celtic to lure him to Glasgow, ahead of a move to the Bundesliga giants.
