Celtic must be very happy with the position that they are in right now. The Hoops are leading the Premiership by nine points and are in the semi-final of the Scottish League Cup as well, where they will be taking on Kilmarnock. On the other hand, Ibrox seems to be a picture of chaos at the moment. They have parted ways with Giovanni van Bronckhorst and are on the search for a new manager.

Celtic have the best squad in the country right now by some distance, to the point where the Hoops’ loan players are starring for Aberdeen.

Liam Scales arrived at Celtic in 2021 from Shamrock Rovers but was not able to make his mark in Ange Postecoglou’s first-team. As a result, he was sent out on loan to Aberdeen in the summer and has established himself as a regular in Jim Goodwin’s side.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Scales has made 19 appearances for Aberdeen and played 1694 minutes of football already this season. Thus, it should come as no surprise that the Dons are hoping that he stay there till the end of the season at least.

Premiership rivals have contacted Celtic over player’s future

Aberdeen seem to have contacted Celtic over Scales. As reported by the Daily Record, Goodwin said:

"“Steven Gunn has been in contact with Liverpool about Leighton Clarkson and with Celtic about Liam Scales. At the moment we are confident that both will be part of our plans when the January window closes.“However, we do have contingency plans in place just in case something were to happen. Obviously if Celtic were to get a load of injuries over the next month or two they might think they need that defensive cover – if something were to happen to some of their centre-backs.“However, Celtic have been great in terms of helping us make that deal happen. And if they want to take Liam back, which I don’t think they will, as they have enough cover there, I am sure they would give us enough notice to make a change in that particular area.”"

Celtic have quite a bit of depth at centre-back. Their four options there right now are Cameron Carter-Vickers, Carl Starfelt, Stephen Welsh and Moritz Jenz, who is on loan from Ligue 1 side Lorient.

On top of that, there are heavy rumours that the club are set to sign another centre-back in Yuki Kobayashi when the January transfer window opens.

So, it is hard to see Celtic recalling Scales anytime soon, unless they are hit by an injury crisis of some sort over the coming weeks and months. In fact, it is hard to see where Scales would fit in even when his loan spell at Aberdeen ends.
