Normally, you think that Celtic would be the side that would sit back when up against Premier League opposition like Everton, one of the biggest traditional sides in English football. Yet, the picture was quite different when the two sides ended up meeting in Australia in the Sydney Super Cup.

The fixture was originally set to feature Celtic and the Rangers in a Glasgow Derby down under before the Ibrox club ended up pulling out. But it was still a glamour tie nonetheless.

Once again Celtic were let down by their finishing in front of goal, or they should have won the game within the 90 minutes itself. Ultimately, Everton went on to win on penalties.

There were a lot of elements of the game that Ange Postecoglou would have been pleased with though, especially the fact that Everton decided to sit back against Celtic. It just showed the kind of respect that this team has been able to earn since the arrival of the Australian manager.

As reported by Everton’s official website, Lampard said after the game:

"“I think with the back five against possession teams like Celtic it means you are going to have to sit back.”"

Thus, it looks like Lampard was happy enough for his Everton side to sit back against Celtic, and it just goes on to show how far the Hoops have come under the management of Postecoglou.

They certainly looked like the better team on the day and Everton played on the counter attack. Yes, while they might not have been able to get the win, the Hoops do have a lot of positives to look back on from the game and it should give them a boost before the second half of the season.

With more of their players back and fitter after the World Cup break, one can even expect an even better Celtic. On the other hand, the Rangers seem a picture of chaos with Giovanni van Bronckhorst being shown the exit door recently.
