With Celtic leading the Premiership race by nine points, the Rangers decided to part ways with Giovanni van Bronckhorst as manager. Initial rumours had suggested that the club were ready to give him more time to turn the season around but that has not turned out to be the case. Now, it remains to be seen who ends up replacing him in the Ibrox hot seat.

The Dutch manager had done a decent job last season, winning the Scottish Cup and reaching the UEFA Europa League final with the Rangers following Steven Gerrard’s mid-season exit, but this time around, he could not find a way to stop their slide in results, as they fell nine points behind Celtic after just 15 league games and endured the worst Champions League group stage campaign ever.

As reported by The Scotsman, bookmakers Betfair have placed Gerrard as the favourite to become the next Rangers manager at 2/1. Right behind him are Michael Beale and Kevin Muscat.

It is worth pointing out that Gerrard had left the club in the middle of last season to take the job at Aston Villa. Since then, he has been shown the exit door by the Premier League club though.

Let’s see if Gerrard does end up making a return to Ibrox, and it will be interesting how their fans react in that case.

While the Englishman did win the Premiership title during his time at Ibrox, it was his only trophy in Scotland out of a possible nine. Not quite a stellar record.

For Celtic, it does not matter who ends up becoming the manager of the Ibrox club. As long as they don’t drop more than eight points till the end of the season, they are guaranteed to become the champions of Scotland, no matter what the Rangers do moving forward.
