Celtic have stormed ahead of the Rangers in the Premiership title race this season. Their 2-0 loss against St Mirren had allowed Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side to sneak back in for a while but since then, they have continued to drop points and find themselves nine points behind the Hoops going into the World Cup break, with just 15 league games played till now.
There is very little doubt about who the better team has been this season till now. But Celtic fans have been handed a fresh worry in recent weeks in the form of VAR.
The system has been recently introduced into the Scottish game and already, a number of decisions have gone against Celtic. Whether it be the stonewall penalty that was not awarded against Hearts, or the one which was awarded to Dundee United against the Hoops when the ball struck Alexandro Bernabei’s arm, who could have done nothing in that situation and did not even know about it unless he has eyes behind his head. Of course, there is the matter of the Jota goal that was ruled out against Motherwell using a camera angle from the opposite end of the pitch.
Yet, Graeme Souness believes that Celtic have had the slice of the luck when it comes to VAR. As reported by the Daily Record, he told BBC Scotland:
"“They [Rangers] have lost the games against Celtic which puts them [Celtic] in a very good position.“But they [Celtic] have got away with a couple of very interesting VAR decisions.“It could have been a very different story if they had gone against them.”"
Souness makes bizarre Celtic VAR claim
It might be tough to find many Rangers fans who agree with that assessment from Souness when it comes to VAR.
It is safe to say that the majority of the decisions since the introduction of VAR have gone against Celtic and yet they have found a way to continue winning games.
Let’s just hope that they carry on doing that after the World Cup break as well. As for Souness’ comments, it is hard to understand where he is coming from and which decisions he is talking about.
