Celtic hero appointed as coach of Premiership rivals

A number of players who played a key part in Celtic’s 9IAR are now taking their first steps in coaching. We have seen Scott Brown move into management, as he is now in the hot seat at English League One club Fleetwood Town, and one cannot rule him out returning to Parkhead one day in that capacity as well.

On the other hand, Charlie Mulgrew has now began his coaching career as well. Dundee United announced on their official website that he has been appointed Player/First-Team Coach.

Mulgrew has been with Dundee United as a player since last season, and will now be joining head coach Liam Fox and assistant Stevie Crawford in the club’s backroom team. They currently sit at the bottom of the Premiership table and can do with all the help that they can get as they look to avoid relegation.

Let’s see how Mulgrew progresses as a coach, although he will continue his playing career at the same time. The 36-year-old has had to deal with injury problems this season though and has to be in the twilight of his run on the pitch.

Mulgrew came through the youth system at Celtic but would go on to leave the club before ever making a senior appearance for them. Incidentally, he played his initial football at the top level while away on loan at Dundee United.

Mulgrew would ultimately return to Celtic, and was Neil Lennon’s first signing of his first stint as Celtic manager. He would go onto win five Premiership titles during his second run with the Hoops, and make more than 200 appearances.

Over his career, he has played for several clubs both in Scotland and down South. Now, it remains to be seen how his coaching career, as he begins his transition from the pitch to the sidelines.
