Celtic are set to take on Frank Lampard’s Everton in a glamour friendly in Australia, in the Sydney Super Cup. The game was originally intended to be a Glasgow Derby against the Rangers, but the Ibrox club ended up pulling out. The Toffees are one of the biggest names in football as well though and thus, it is going to be a big one.
Despite their place in the footballing pyramid, Everton have had a rough time recently though. Lampard did a great job, guiding them to safety in thrilling fashion last season. But now, they find themselves in a relegation battle once again, sitting just a point above the drop zone going into the World Cup break.
Understandably, there are question marks over the future of Lampard as a result. And worryingly for Celtic fans, one of the managers who has been linked with the Merseyside club as a potential replacement, if the Chelsea legend ended up getting sacked, is none other than Ange Postecoglou. There is some good news in that regard.
As reported by Football Insider, Everton have decided to stand by Lampard and give him time to turn their season around.
Everton hand Lampard boost to Celtic amid Postecoglou links
To be frank, pardon the pun, Everton’s difficult start to the season has not come as a surprise. The club saw star man Richarlison leave for Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, while several others headed out the exit door as well. The squad has not really been improved much by the summer arrivals.
On the other hand, Celtic find themselves in a commendable position right now and hold a nine point lead over second-placed Rangers in the Premiership.
The turnaround that this side has made under the management of Postecoglou is remarkable and it is not hard to understand why the fans don’t want to see the Australian leave the club anytime soon.
