Celtic manager, Ange Postecoglou, has recently been linked with the Everton job. Frank Lampard did a remarkable job of keeping the Toffees up in the Premier League last season, in a thrilling finish to their campaign. This time around, the Merseyside club find themselves in another relegation battle though and thus, the Chelsea legend’s future is up in the air.
Everton currently sit at 17th, on 14 points from the first 15 Premier League games of the season. They are just a point above the drop zone. Thus, it would not come as a major surprise if Lampard is shown the exit door soon, if results don’t improve.
One of the names that appears to be on Everton’s wishlist, in case they change managers, is that of Postecoglou. The Australian was an unknown in European football when he arrived at Celtic from Yokohama F. Marinos but has gone on to become one of the most highly-rated managers on the continent within such a short span of time.
When asked if the Everton job would interest Postecoglou, Noel Whelan told Football Insider:
"“Absolutely. Everton are historically a big club.“They’ve got great history behind them, a great fanbase, and it’s a really great club to be at – I loved my time there as a kid.“I think they need a different way to go. They’ve brought in some top players, some exciting attacking players – and it just doesn’t seem to be working.“I think Postecoglou would be looking at that and thinking he could get a lot more out of that squad than Lampard is.“This is a perfect time right now for the board to make a change.“There’s a window of opportunity to get Postecoglou in. Whether they take it, time will tell.”"
Would Postecoglou be interested in leaving Celtic in order to join Everton?
At Celtic, Postecoglou is constantly competing for titles. It is safe to say that that would not be the case at Everton.
In fact, Lampard cannot be blamed for the fact that Everton are in the relegation zone once again. The Toffees simply did not improve the side over the summer, while Richarlison headed for the exit door.
Thus, it will be very interesting if Postecoglou was indeed interested in leaving Celtic in order to get involved in a relegation battle with Everton. Yes, they are a huge club without a shadow of a doubt. But they are not in the best position right now. Of course, stranger things have happened in football but this feels pretty unlikely.
