Celtic needed to sign a defensive midfielder in the recent summer transfer window. It was a position that they were lacking in options and ultimately, the Hoops would go onto add to their ranks by bringing in Oliver Abildgaard from Rubin Kazan on a season-long loan deal. It would be safe to say that the move has not worked out for either the player or the club.

Abildgaard has rarely featured for Celtic and is yet to make a start in Ange Postecoglou’s side. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has made 9 appearances for the club and has played just 156 minutes of football in total.

Thus, it is pretty clear that Abildgaard has not been able to make enough of an impression on Postecoglou to be a regular starter for Celtic. As a result, he has mostly been used as a substitute in order to see out games.

Another player that Celtic were linked with in the summer is Argentine defensive midfielder, Fausto Vera. And it looks like he has caught the eye of Europe while representing Corinthians. Fabrizio Romano tweeted out that interest in him is growing and he has been the Brazilian club’s best player in multiple aspects.

Thus, it looks like Vera could have been a good signing for Celtic. Back then, he was playing for Argentinos Juniors.

Now, he is playing for Corinthians in Brazil, and they shelled out a transfer fee in the region of €6 million to sign him in the summer. Thus, he might be out of Celtic’s range already.

Having invested in other areas of the pitch though, it is understandable if the Hoops did not have the ability to shell out that kind of a transfer fee in the defensive midfield position. Let’s see what the future holds for Vera.
