Going into the World Cup break, Celtic find themselves nine points clear off the Rangers in the Premiership table. In fact, the Ibrox club are closer to third-placed Aberdeen than they are to the Hoops. Not many people would have expected this to be the case coming into the season. After all, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side had won the Scottish Cup and reached the UEFA Europa League final last season.

Naturally, most people expected a close title race between Celtic and the Rangers this time around. But unless Ange Postecoglou’s side struggle badly in the second half of the season and the Ibrox club are close to perfect, it is hard to see that happening.

Of course, leads can be overturned. Celtic proved that themselves last season by overcoming great odds to win the Premiership by four points. So, they of all people should know that they cannot rest on their laurels.

It does not seem like they are doing that either. As reported by The National, David Turnbull said:

"“I don’t think the gaffer or any of the boys focus on the league table, we focus on ourselves and try to get three points in every game.“We take each game as it comes, so we don’t really look at the table.“There is plenty of motivation for the boys every week. The league title is a motivation, every game we play we are always ready to go and play our game style. So far it is going well.“I didn’t know the Rangers result before the game. By the time we got here and got ready, we focused on our own game. I saw it after the game though.“We don’t focus on anyone else, or their results, it is about what we do.”"

Celtic are focusing only on themselves and not on the Rangers

Celtic might not have played their best football on a consistent basis this season, and have had to rely on their unbelievable spirit and ability to grind out wins from the toughest of positions on numerous occasions already, but nobody can argue with the results that the Hoops have been able to put up till now.

Celtic have won 14 of the 15 Premiership games that they have played this season. Their only defeat came against St Mirren. On the other hand, the Rangers have drawn three and lost two of their 15 games till now.

The World Cup break could prove to be very vital though and it will be almost like a different season when club football resumes. Hopefully, Celtic will not only be able to pick up where they left off but even improve in certain aspects.

That is perhaps the biggest and most promising takeaway from this, that Celtic still have room for improvement.
