News broke out recently that Celtic were in talks to extend the current deal of Giorgos Giakoumakis. It is not hard to understand why as the Greek striker has been the most reliable source of goals for the Hoops since the turn of the year and played a bigger role in their Premiership triumph last season than he often gets credit for. Thus, it would be in the best interests of the club to keep him around as long as possible.

His current deal is believed to run till the summer of 2026 but the Hoops are believed to want to extend it by a further year and give him a new 5-year deal as a reward for his performances in recent times.

Frank McAvennie has questioned though whether Giakoumakis would want to sign an extension, considering the fact that he is not playing every week and is having to rotate with Kyogo Furuhashi as the number nine instead.

As reported by Football Insider, the former Celtic star said regarding the Giakoumakis situation:

"“I do know whether or not he will want to sign. He wants to play all the time, I think he is the kind of guy who wants to play every week. I do like him but I think the manager is going to address that, I think he has to address it.”"

Celtic hero makes surprise claim about Giakoumakis’ future at Celtic

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Giakoumakis at Celtic but at this moment, there has not been anything to suggest that he is not happy with his playing time at the club.

On the contrary, this might be the best way to use him. Not many players can keep up with playing every three days and we have seen the Greek striker struggle with injury problems in the past.

Alternating with someone like Kyogo means that it keeps him fresh and keeps him on his toes at all times. Of course, there have been some question marks over both of their finishing in recent times and many have even suggested that the Hoops need another striker.
