Celtic are flying high after they went seven points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, as the Rangers lost 2-1 away against St Johnstone. That means that no matter what happens, the Hoops will go into the World Cup break as league leaders. That does not mean that Ange Postecoglou does not have his fair share of things to worry about as well.
The biggest must be how ineffective and wasteful Celtic were in front of goal in the Champions League. In several matches, the Hoops were able to create multiple chances for themselves, yet, one opportunity after another went begging.
Celtic should have beaten Shakhtar Donetsk, and possibly could have taken points off of Real Madrid and RB Leipzig as well. Instead, they finished bottom of their group, with two draws and zero wins to their name. Not what their performances and efforts deserved.
Giorgos Giakoumakis managed to get a goal to his name, while Kyogo drew a blank. Their top scorer of the Champions League campaign was Jota, despite his injury problems, with two. And now, Celtic have been tipped to sign a top striker.
Celtic tipped to sign top striker after struggling in the Champions League
As reported by Football Insider, Frank McAvennie said:
"“The manager is not going to go into next season’s campaign and miss the amount of chances we have missed.“No matter how much he likes the boys that are playing, the fans are all saying the same thing. Everyone likes Giakoumakis and Kyogo but we need a decent striker. If that was the case we would have been through.“If they gets a top striker in beside them, watching him train everyday, someone who is a top goalscorer, it will be a benefit to Giakoumakis and Kyogo.“"
Could Celtic do with another top class finisher in front of goal? Yes, especially at the Champions League level. Now, this is not to say that Giakoumakis and Kyogo are not very good players.
But we have seen Kyogo go through his struggles in front of goal in recent times. And while Giakoumakis has been better, he has not been at his clinical best either.
Strikers are going to have their rough patches, and having just two in the squad might not be the greatest idea. Thus, do not be surprised if Celtic go after another frontman soon.
