Celtic have quite a bit of depth all over the pitch right now. That is due to the smart recruitment decisions that the club has made ever since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou as manager last year. The board has backed the boss and we are seeing the positive effects of that approach, as the Hoops have gone from the disastrous team that finished 25 points behind the Rangers to Premiership and League Cup double winners within the space of a year.
Of course, Postecoglou has not gotten everything right until now and you cannot expect any manager to do that. One of those things has to be the signing of a defensive midfielder.
Celtic do have a few players capable of playing in that position like Oliver Abildgaard, Yosuke Ideguchi and James McCarthy. None of them has impressed since arriving in Glasgow though. And that might be the biggest hole in the squad at the moment, the lack of someone who can come in and help see out games, a role that Nir Bitton played last season.
Whether it be due to that or a combination of several reasons, but Celtic are conceding more often this season. In the league, they have given up 11 goals in the first 13 games, while in the previous campaign they had conceded 22 goals over 38 matches.
Celtic need to bring back former star for free in January
Celtic might have the perfect solution to their defensive midfielder problems, with Victor Wanyama set to leave CF Montreal and be available as a free agent.
Yes, he might be 31 years of age, but he does not have any fitness issues. In fact, according to stats from Transfermarkt, Wanyama made 38 appearances last season and played 3174 minutes of football in total.
He is also familiar with the Scottish game already and Celtic do not really need someone to start every game. They just need someone for the big matches and help see out the other ones. Thus, a free transfer move for Wanyama could be perfect.
