Celtic already had a mountain to climb in the Champions League this midweek, as they face Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Hoops have not won a single game in the competition this season and this is their last chance to do so. Unfortunately, they have been handed a major injury blow heading into the big match.
Celtic are already without their captain Callum McGregor, who suffered an injury while facing RB Leipzig in the Champions League. And now, they have lost their stand-in skipper to injury as well.
Cameron Carter-Vickers had returned from an injury not too long ago, but the United States international is now back on the shelf.
As tweeted out by Andrew Maclean, Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Carter-Vickers has not travelled with the squad to Madrid after picking up an injury at the weekend. Thus, he will not be available for the game.
Celtic suffer Carter-Vickers injury blow before facing Real Madrid
It goes without saying that Carter-Vickers is one of the most important players in this Celtic team. He has been a rock at the back ever since arriving at Parkhead, and is the club’s best defender.
Thus, facing Real Madrid without him is a big worry for Celtic. Carl Starfelt is yet to return from injury as well and as a result, it will be interesting to see which combination Postecoglou goes with in the heart of defence.
Celtic might have nothing left to play for in the Champions League this season, already guaranteed to bottom the group, but the same cannot be said about Real Madrid, with the top spot still up for grabs.
The Hoops must avoid a heavy defeat at the hands of Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. Anything other than a loss will be a memorable result for Postecoglou’s side.
