Celtic have been active when it comes to recruiting players to strengthen the squad while shifting those who are not making an impact on the team. Of course, not everything can go according to plan and in the summer, they lost two crucial midfielders in Nir Bitton and Tom Rogic. As a result, James McCarthy had a good opportunity to make an impression and fulfil the role of a veteran presence in the middle of the park, something that he had failed to do last season.

McCarthy could not grab the chance though and the former Everton man finds himself as a fringe player at Celtic right now.

Since moving to Celtic on a free transfer in the summer of 2021, McCarthy has not made much of an impact and most of his appearances have come as a second-half substitute.

This season, not much has changed and he has not made a single start till now. According to stats from Transfermarkt, McCarthy has made 5 appearances in this campaign, which have combined for 62 minutes of action. As a result, it looks like Celtic might be ready to part ways.

Celtic ready to let player leave in January

As reported by Football Insider, Celtic will listen to offers for McCarthy in January. They are keen to free up space on their wage bill and find a new club for the veteran midfielder.

It might not be very simple to find a new club for McCarthy though as it is believed that he is on around £20,000 per week at Parkhead at the moment.

In fact, the biggest surprise about Celtic signing McCarthy was not the fact that they brought the midfielder to Parkhead, but the fact that they decided to hand a four-year deal to someone who has a well documented injury history and was already 30 years of age at that point.
