Celtic are out of the Champions League and European competition altogether for the season, with the Hoops guaranteed to bottom their group, no matter what happens on the final matchday. Thus, it is safe to say that Ange Postecoglou and company will be disappointed with their results in the competition.
What does give hope for the future though is the performances that Celtic were able to put in, even at this level. They did not sit back, soak the pressure and hope to hit the big teams on the counter. Instead, they played their football and were let down only by their poor finishing.
Celtic have not won a single game in the group stage, even though they should have gotten the better of Shakhtar Donetsk on both occasions and could have gotten something out of the games against Real Madrid and RB Leipzig as well.
Their last chance to win a Champions League game this season will come against Real Madrid, away at the Santiago Bernabeu. If the Hoops are able to do that, it would go on to be a famous night in the history of the club. The players seem ready to have a go at the European champions though.
Celtic star makes incredible Real Madrid admission before facing them at Santiago Bernabeu
As reported by The Scotsman, Cameron Carter-Vickers said about the club’s upcoming game vs Real Madrid:
"“We’ve attacked all the games in the group so far and we’ll look to do the same in the Bernabeu. We’ll have a go at Real Madrid.”"
Carter-Vickers has been one of Celtic’s best players this season as well and stepped up in the absence of Callum McGregor and taken up the captain’s armband.
His comments will be music to the ears of Postecoglou, who has repeated time and again that Celtic will not be changing their style of football, no matter the level of opposition against them.
Of course, it would be a risky thing to do at the Santiago Bernabeu, with Real Madrid still having the top spot to play for. On the other hand, there will be no pressure on the Hoops and let’s see if that can help their performance.
