Celtic have a much deeper squad right now than they did when Ange Postecoglou arrived as the manager of the club in the summer of 2021. Since then, the Hoops have backed the Australian in the transfer market and the board deserve a lot of credit for that. It was an out of the box appointment in the first place and not a popular one when it was made. They have been proven right over time though.

Despite the increased depth, there are certain positions where the club could still do with more options. One of them is defensive midfield.

Celtic brought in Oliver Abildgaard on a season-long loan from Rubin Kazan in the summer but he is yet to feature much. There are question marks over his long-term future at the club as well, amidst recent rumours that the Hoops are looking to sign another defensive midfielder in January.

One player who could be a solid addition in the area is Victor Wanyama, who is set to leave CF Montreal. As reported by 90min, he said:

"“At the end of the season, I think I will leave. I have had a great time here. I have enjoyed being part of the team and it has been great.”"

Celtic should bring back former star on a free transfer in January

Celtic fans are well aware of what Wanyama is capable of, as it is at Parkhead that he had established himself as a star before moving to Southampton, eventually joining Tottenham Hotspur.

He has been with CF Montreal over the past couple of years and rumours had linked him with a move to Celtic before he had made the switch to the MLS.

Wanyama is still just 31 years of age though and has played regular football for CF Montreal. So there are no question marks over his fitness, unlike when Celtic had signed James McCarthy.

Also, one has to wonder how much Celtic will even need a defensive midfielder, except against top oppositions. Thus, it would not make sense to spend a big transfer fee to strengthen the position. A free transfer for someone with the quality of Wanyama would be perfect, with the Kenyan never making a secret of his desire to represent the Hoops again one day.
