Most Celtic fans will remember about the disaster that was the launch of the European Super League, when twelve of Europe’s biggest clubs, including the big six of England, had tried to form a breakaway league. Well, it is safe to say that things did not go according to plan as their own fans protested against the idea and they had to pull out. The idea did not even last two days.

Yet, here we are more than a year later and there are rumblings about the European Super League once again. Clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus have never moved away from the idea altogether.

And as reported by the Mirror, a new, revised version could include a proposal to Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers because they would be seen as a huge draw for any future breakaway.

There have been murmurs about an Atlantic League that would include Celtic in the past but those have led nowhere. Would it be in the club’s best interests to follow up if they did receive an invitation into the European Super League though?

Celtic and Rangers linked with European Super League out of the blue

The Hoops’ stance on the entire European Super League saga had been clear in 2021 itself. Back then, as reported by Sky Sports, it was understood Peter Lawwell and Celtic, like many of those clubs left out of the ESL, were strongly against the breakaway.

It would be interesting to see though if things have changed over time, with there being a lot of changes at the club since then, as well as the fact that they could potentially be invited this time around.

The fact of the matter is though, even if Celtic did get into something like a European Super League, they would not be able to compete with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus and others. And considering the backlash that English teams received from the supporters, it is safe to say that the Hoops can expect something similar if they tried to join in. The best idea would be to stay away from it.
