Last time around when Celtic met RB Leipzig, away in Germany, the Bundesliga side knew that anything other than a win would leave their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread. They did get all three points and a 3-1 victory at home. Now, the shoe is on the other foot and if the Hoops do not win then their hopes of making it to the knockout phase of the competition might be as good as over.
Celtic did show enough away in Germany to suggest though that they can beat RB Leipzig in Glasgow, if they can make the right adjustments. Incidentally, the Rangers had been successful in doing that in the previous campaign.
Another thing that should give Celtic hope of their chances is the fact that RB Leipzig are yet to win a game away from home this season.
Willi Orban seems confident that the side are moving in the right direction though. As reported by the Daily Record, the RB Leipzig star said:
"“We’re going in the right direction, so we’re going to Glasgow with a good feeling. I’m convinced that we’ll soon win away from home as well.”"
Can Celtic beat RB Leipzig at Parkhead this midweek?
RB Leipzig are not going through a good campaign overall and currently find themselves sitting at 11th in the Bundesliga table. They were considered as one of the favourites for the title ahead of the season.
On the other hand, Celtic are not going through a good run of form either. They have won two of their past six games across all competitions and even those were narrow 2-1 victories over Motherwell and St Johnstone.
Thus, when the two sides meet in the Champions League this midweek, a lot will be riding on the result of the game and it will be interesting to see which of them is able to step up to the plate and handle the pressure better.
Celtic do have a lot of injury issues at the moment and combine that with RB Leipzig’s individual quality in the forward areas, and one would have to consider the German side as favourites. Never count the Hoops out at Parkhead though.
