With Celtic winning the Premiership and League Cup title last season against all odds, it was clear that the Rangers needed to make something happen. And while they let key players leave, the Ibrox side did make a couple of moves as well. Their most eye catching move of the summer was bringing in 21-year-old Turkish international, Ridvan Yilmaz, from Besiktas in a £5.5 million transfer deal.
Left-back had become an area of worry for the Rangers in recent times. Borna Barisic’s form had taken a major dip, and it was actually an area that Celtic had managed to exploit in last season’s Glasgow Derbies.
Thus, the Rangers fans felt that the arrival of Yilmaz would solve the issue for the foreseeable future. After all, he had impressed for Besiktas and was a full Turkish international.
It would be an understatement to say that the move has not worked out and Yilmaz is already being linked with an exit.
£5.5 million star Rangers signed to stop Celtic already being linked with an Ibrox exit
As reported by the Daily Record, several reports are suggesting that Galatasaray are “monitoring” the player’s fortunes in the Scottish Premiership. The Turkish giants have added Yilmaz to a wishlist of January recruits.
According to stats from Transfermarkt, Yilmaz has made just 4 appearances for Rangers till now and played a total of 188 minutes of football.
If Yilmaz did end up leaving the Rangers in the near future, it is safe to say that it would be a major blot on the club’s transfer activity. It goes without saying that a package worth around £5.5 million is significant in Scottish football. That’s more than the figure Celtic paid out for the likes of Albian Ajeti and Vasilis Barkas.
In reality, only one of the Rangers’ signings from the summer can be considered as a success story and that is Antonio Colak. All the others are either struggling with fitness or form.
