Celtic did not just lose their game against RB Leipzig to go bottom of their group in the Champions League but they lost their captain to injury as well. Callum McGregor is believed to have injured himself during a tackle and while he did try to continue on, it just was not possible and he was soon forced off the pitch, in the first half itself.
Alarm bells were sent ringing amongst Celtic fans after Ange Postecoglou made worrying comments after the match regarding the injury status of McGregor.
Now, they wait to learn the extent of the injury. If McGregor is out for any significant length of time then it would be a major blow for the Hoops. It goes without saying the that the Scottish midfielder is one of their most important players, if not the most important.
As reported by The Scottish Sun, Celtic are set to discover the extent of McGregor’s knee injury today. The club captain underwent a scan yesterday.
Latest update on the injury status of Celtic captain
McGregor was set to miss the game against St Johnstone anyway, through suspension after receiving a red card against Motherwell. But fears are that his absence could turn out to be longer than that as a result of the injury that he suffered against RB Leipzig.
McGregor is the kind of player whose importance you understand the most when he is not playing, and that could very well be the case moving forward.
While the captain has come under some criticism for some of his recent displays, there is no doubt about the fact that the club have no real replacement for him.
It feels like Postecoglou might have to rely on the likes of James McCarthy, Oliver Abildgaard and Aaron Mooy, in the absence of McGregor.
