The last week has been a rough one for Celtic captain Callum McGregor. First, he had to take one for the team in the game against Motherwell, as he was sent off after denying the visitors the chance to go through on goal. And then, he made the mistake that led to RB Leipzig’s opener away in Germany, and was then forced off the pitch with an injury in the first half itself.

McGregor’s poor touch allowed RB Leipzig to go on the counter-attack and ultimately score through Christopher Nkunku, just when Celtic had started to dominate proceedings. And during that course of play, the captain seemed to pick up an injury.

It goes without saying that McGregor is one of the most important players that Celtic have right now and they do not have a clear replacement for him either.

Ange Postecoglou’s comments regarding his situation after the game were very worrying though. As reported by the Daily Record, speaking on BT Sport, the Celtic manager said about McGregor:

"“It doesn’t look good, we were a bit unlucky with the goal, he (McGregor) was about to have a shot and something happened between his knee, he put an enormous effort to chase back and it was his toe poke which put the guy through. Looking at him, it doesn’t look good, but I will see what the doctor says.”"

Celtic fans will be worried by Postecoglou’s update on McGregor

McGregor’s injury could not have come at a worse time either. The club have already been struggling for form and it is time to start worrying. Over the past five games, they have lost thrice, drawn once and won just one time.

Those are not the kind of numbers that you associate with Celtic. It must be pointed out though that three of those five games have been in the Champions League, and the performances have not been bad.

McGregor is the kind of player whose importance you understand when he is not playing. And if he is out for any considerable length of time then Celtic will surely miss him badly, and this could end up proving to be a season-defining moment.
