It is pretty clear that Cameron Carter-Vickers is Celtic’s most important defender. Both Moritz Jenz and Stephen Welsh have had decent performances this season when paired up with the American international but without him, the duo looked completely lost in the game against St Mirren, as they tried to form a partnership of their own.

Carter-Vickers picked up an injury in the Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk and there were some hopes that he could be fit after the international break.

That has not happened and he is set to miss this weekend’s game against Motherwell as well. But encouragingly, it does not look like he is a million miles away and there seems to be a chance that he could be back after that.

As reported by Glasgow Times, Ange Postecoglou said about Carter-Vickers in his pre-match press conference before facing Motherwell this weekend in the Premiership:

"“Cameron will miss tomorrow but he’s a little bit more advanced so we’ll see how he is after the weekend.”"

It is safe to say that Celtic need Carter-Vickers back in the mix as soon as possible. Not only has he been fantastic himself but he also seems to improve those around him.

Carter-Vickers has been at Parkhead for more than a year now and during that period of time, it is hard to think of any games in which he was absolutely terrible. The American star is just a very solid player.

That is why Celtic are believed to have shelled out a transfer fee in the region of £6 million in order to sign him from Tottenham Hotspur this summer and that figure could potentially rise to a club record £10 million, if all add-ons are met.

With Carl Starfelt also out, it looks like we will once again see the duo of Jenz and Welsh this weekend. Hopefully, they improve from their last performance.
