As the World Cup finals get closer, several Celtic players are still on track to feature in Qatar for their national sides. One player’s dream of being included has taken a major step forward though, after his recent performance for the U21 side of his nation.

Celtic star, Matt O’Riley, only moved to the club in January of this year and has quickly gone from playing League One in England to winning a league title with the Hoops and playing Champions League football against Real Madrid in a matter of months.

O’Riley seems to be adapting to the step up very well so far and looks set to have another great season, having made a very good start to the campaign.

As reported by the Glasgow Times, earlier in September, when asked by Bold if he felt he would receive his first full Danish call-up, O’Riley said:

"“I hope so, but if it doesn’t happen right now, that’s ok too.“I still hope that I will be in the U21s or become part of the A national team.“Personally, I think a lot about the World Cup, because I believe that there are opportunities for me to participate.“If it happens, it happens, and if it doesn’t, that’s ok too. I’m glad it’s being talked about as a possibility.”"

He continued:

"“In my own head, I’m good enough to join. But I think we have a lot of good players all over the pitch. I have seen the games against France and Croatia recently, where we played really well.“I have also spoken to some friends from Celtic and they think that Denmark has some of the best chances to win the World Cup. If those things are said, then it is very exciting to be Dane.”"

Celtic star’s World Cup hopes have been handed boost after recent display

O’ Riley has given his chances of a call up to the full Denmark squad for the World Cup a real boost over recent weeks.

He has started the season well for the Hoops and featured strongly in high profile matches in the league, against Rangers, and in the Champions League, against Real Madrid and Shakhtar Donetsk.

And he appeared for Denmark U21 on Tuesday, against Croatia U21 and opened the scoring for them after 10 minutes with a well placed header beyond the goalkeeper, his second goal at that level so far.

What a great signing he has been so far for the Hoops. Whether he gets to play in Qatar or not, it’ll have been a fantastic year for the player and at just 21 years of age, he has many more ahead of him.

Interestingly, he has already been linked with clubs like Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund.
