In his short time at Celtic, Ange Postecoglou has made quite an impression. So much so that he’s been mentioned by the media in connection with a number of potential vacancies in England. But could he jump ship and head for the glitz and glamour of the Premier League like Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers have done in recent years?

Postecoglou arrived in Scotland as a relative unknown to most fans and with a huge task ahead of him: to revitalise Celtic after their disastrous 2020/2021 season. By winning the Premiership title, the Scottish League Cup and bringing an exciting style of play back to Parkhead, he has been successful by most measures.

That success means we’ll hear his name being linked to clubs like Brighton & Hove Albion, Leicester City and others, when managerial changes take place and vacancies arise.

Would Postecoglou follow that interest up? After all, the likes of Gerrard and Rodgers did leave the Rangers and Celtic, respectively, in the middle of the campaign to head for the Premier League.

Celtic: Major Gerrard claim made about Postecoglou

Former Celtic star Charlie Nicholas doesn’t see it turning out that way for Postecoglou. As reported by the Scottish Daily Express, he wrote in his Scottish Express Sport column:

"“Ange Postecoglou won’t be interested in the Leicester City job if it becomes available – but I think in the fullness of time he will leave Celtic and it will be to a European club. The lure of the Premier League is a huge one but I think there are times to make that move and I think Steven Gerrard made the wrong choice to go to Aston Villa last season.“Ange won’t make the same mistake. He can see what happens down there. I could be wrong – and I was wrong about Gerrard – but I think he will wait until the right opportunity comes around. I have the feeling he is enjoying where he is and he wants to achieve more at Celtic.“However, I think if he continues to bring success then it will lead to offers and I get the feeling he would like to work in Europe rather than England. Brendan Rodgers couldn’t wait to leave Celtic after falling out with Peter Lawwell and now he’s under pressure and Leicester don’t look like a great option for anyone right now.”"

Right now both Rodgers and Gerrard are under pressure in their roles at Leicester City and Aston Villa, respectively. Only a few weeks back they seemed like finalists in the sack race but have managed to survive in their roles for now.

Postecoglou on the other hand will be looking forward to his players returning from international duty, to getting back to winning ways again in the league and contemplating back to back Champions League matches against RB Leipzig.

It’s certainly a more positive challenge than struggling for results in the Premier League and one which should keep him busy at Celtic for a while yet.
