Celtic: Fresh update on Giorgos Giakoumakis’ injury
Giorgos Giakoumakis has been absolutely brilliant for Celtic since the start of the year and many fans feel that he does not get enough playing time, with Kyogo Furuhashi starting most games. With the Japanese star going through a bit of a goal drought though, there was a possibility that the Greek striker’s playing time could increase after the international break.
Unfortunately, there are now injury concerns surrounding Giakoumakis, who is believed to have undergone a scan recently after feeling some discomfort. And while that showed nothing, suggestions have been that he missed training as well.
Gus Poyet had refused to rule him out heading into the Greece national team’s game against Northern Ireland, but now, he has been dropped from the matchday squad.
Suffice to say that this will leave a lot of Celtic fans sweating about the fitness status of Giakoumakis, especially since Daizen Maeda and Sead Haksabanovic are also injury concerns coming out of this international break. Thus, the Hoops’ options going forward might have been reduced drastically inside a week.
Celtic: Fresh update on Giakoumakis injury
Giakoumakis had arrived at Celtic last summer and had struggled to remain fit for any considerable length of time in the first half of the campaign. That had led to many fans writing him off completely.
But the Greek striker would come into his own after the winter break and often does not get the credit for the role he played in Celtic’s Premiership triumph, carrying the goalscoring burden while Kyogo was out with an injury.
Hopefully, Giakoumakis has not picked up any serious problem and will be fit and back in action soon. The fact that Poyet did not rule him out beforehand, gives some hope regarding the situation and hopefully, dropping him completely from the matchday squad was just a precautionary measure, with nothing to play for.
