It is not often that you let a future Scotland national team captain go during his youth career because of a lack of size but that is exactly what Celtic did with Andy Robertson. And it is safe to say that he has been on quite the footballing journey since then, which has seen him play in Scottish third division football at Queen’s Park as well as lift the Champions League and Premier League trophies with Liverpool.

Still just 28 years of age, Robertson has plenty of top level football left in the tank and continues to be a key part of the current Liverpool team.

At the same time though, he has never made a secret of the fact that growing up, his dream was to represent Celtic. Thus, could a move to Parkhead be on in the future?

That is certainly an interesting question whose answer even Robertson does not seem to know, although he seems to be clear that he does not want to go to Celtic at a stage of his career when he is no longer able to perform. As reported by The Scottish Sun, he told BT Sport’s Currie Club Podcast:

"“Every time I watch Celtic, I consider it.“When you watch them and see a packed Celtic Park, as a fan you always have that dream.“Ideally I want to finish my career here at Liverpool. If I can stay at the top of my game, at the top of the tree my whole career, that’s the route I want to go down.“But also, when I look at Celtic and when I was growing up, I was thinking I wanted to give them my best years. When I was at Queen’s Park I had a dream of still playing with Celtic and always dreamed of giving my best years to Celtic.“And now I don’t want to go as a 34 or 35-year-old old guy that my uncles start hating on me because I can’t move any more! Time will tell. I’m very much a person who lives in the moment.“I don’t look too far ahead and I don’t often look back. There will be a time for that.”"

Could Robertson end up at Celtic one day?

It will be very interesting to see how long Robertson can perform at the very top level for Liverpool. If his performance levels drop, one would not expect the Reds to take long to replace him.

At the same time though, they still have someone like James Milner in their ranks, which goes on to show how highly they rate experience as well.

If Robertson ends up leaving Liverpool sometime in his early 30s then a move to Celtic could be very plausible, considering that he is still fit and performing at a good level. But if he is no longer able to deliver on the pitch, joining his boyhood club might not be the wisest decision, where anything other than a win is considered a crisis.
