Celtic slumped to an unexpected 2-0 defeat at the hands of St Mirren away in Paisley at the weekend to bring the Rangers back into the title race and undo a lot of the great work that they had done up until now this season. The Bhoys were in very good form and were expected to get past the opposition easily, but clearly, that did not turn out to be the case on this occasion.

Instead, Celtic were completely outplayed by St Mirren and at the end of the day, nobody can blame luck or refereeing mistakes for this result. Ange Postecoglou’s side just did not turn up on the day, in what was one of the worst performances from them in a long, long time.

The sudden poor display has left a lot of Celtic fans scratching their heads. The consensus has been though that Postecoglou made way too many changes on the day and left too many key players out.

And Chris Sutton seemed to agree with that sentiment as he tweeted out:

Sutton delivers perfect verdict on Celtic’s defeat vs St Mirren

It was a terrible result for Celtic and there was no real positive to take out of this game to be honest.

The only thing that Celtic fans can hope is that this turns out to be a bit of a wake up call. The Hoops might have already shown that they are a cut above the Rangers, in their 4-0 win at Parkhead, but they will still need to get results over 38 games if they are to win the league title and there is no place for complacency or having off days.

The result leaves the Rangers just two points behind Celtic and gives them renewed hope that they are still very much in this title race, something that was in doubt just 24 hours ago.
