Celtic star gets international call up while Rangers player dropped
The countdown for the 2022 World Cup has begun, with the qualified nations ramping up their preparation ahead of the biggest tournament on the planet. A number of players from Celtic are expected to represent their countries in Qatar, and for most, it would be a dream come true.
Although there is still time before the announcements of the World Cup squads, international games will be played in September to understand their position before the mega-event. While teams in Europe will be involved in UEFA Nations League matches, teams from South America, North America, Africa and Asia will host friendlies amongst themselves to see out the final stage of preparation.
The USMNT have qualified for the World Cup and will likewise play friendlies against Japan and Saudi Arabia on September 23 and September 27, respectively.
On Friday, the USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter announced their 26-man squad. As reported by Glasgow World, there was no place for Rangers’ James Sands while Celtic’s Cameron Carter-Vickers was picked.

Sands received a red card in the Rangers’ heavy 3-0 defeat to Napoli in the Champions League. And the defender or defensive midfielder has appeared to struggled badly in some recent games.
On the other hand, Carter-Vickers has continued to perform at a very high level for Celtic, since they signed him on a permanent deal from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.
Now that he has made the squad for the last warm-up matches before the World Cup, Carter-Vickers has a golden chance to secure his World Cup spot with some eye-catching training sessions and perhaps a few appearances in the friendlies. On the other hand, it is pretty safe to say that Sands’ place on the flight to Qatar is pretty much up in the air right now.
