Celtic failed to mark their return to the Champions League with a win, as Real Madrid handed them a 3-0 defeat in their own backyard. That being said, it was always going to be an uphill task to come up against the European champions and Ange Postecoglou’s side can be satisfied with the performance that they put in on the night.

While the 3-0 scoreline might not suggest so, but for the most part, it was a very close match, with Celtic even dominating Real Madrid for the first half an hour or so. Ultimately, Los Blancos’ incredible quality would shine through in the second half. But at the same time, if the Hoops had taken their chances, they could have easily scored two or three goals themselves.

Thus, coming out of the night, there were mixed emotions amongst the fans. On one hand, it was a good test and showed that Celtic are capable of performing at the Champions League level. But on the other hand, it also felt like a bit of a missed opportunity.

What was the reaction of the dressing room to the game though? As reported by the Daily Record, David Turnbull said:

"“The response at the end of the game in the dressing room was positive. We want to compete against these teams and we did that against Real Madrid in spells. It is now about doing that for the 90 minutes. But everybody is fine.“We will just dust ourselves down and get on with it. You saw it the other week. We made nine changes in the team and we still got the victory we wanted.”"

It is safe to say that the Celtic players should be proud of their performance vs Real Madrid. They went toe-to-toe with the European champions and gave them a scare in the first half for sure.

Now, they have games coming up against the likes of Shakhtar Donetsk and RB Leipzig, and ultimately, those will end up deciding whether Celtic make it to the round of 16 of the competition or end up getting knocked out.

Things are looking much more stable in the Premiership, with Celtic holding a five point lead over the Rangers after just six games.
