Celtic’s return to the Champions League might have started with a loss but it was not a complete disappointment either. The Hoops went toe-to-toe with the European champions, Real Madrid, and outplayed them in the first half. Most would argue that they should have been two or three goals up, by the time Los Blancos scored their first of the evening.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side would ultimately completely outplay Celtic in the second half though, score three goals and walked out with a 3-0 victory. But there were positives to take from this game for sure.

For one, it showed that Celtic can definitely compete at this level and there is a good chance that they could make it out of the group, if they can produce similar performances against the likes of RB Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk.

On the other hand, the atmosphere at Celtic Park on the night was spectacular, to nobody’s surprise. It did leave the Real Madrid players impressed as well. As reported by the Daily Record, Toni Kroos told beIN SPORTS:

"“That’s what we were expecting, that they would come out with this amazing atmosphere, even for us!“They are not negative to their rivals, they are just supporting their team. The atmosphere was crazy.“We knew we had to calm the crowd down a bit. We knew the team were going to attack from the first minute and they did. You have to survive the first 20/25 minutes, knowing that the game will calm down a bit. That’s how we won it.“The mentality of these people who accept their rivals, it’s a spectacular atmosphere.“We didn’t expect an easy game, it’s a good team here at home. They’ve beaten the Europa League finalist 4-0.“They can play football well, but you had to be calm and in control. It’s a deserved win.”"

It is safe to say that it was a night to remember for most Celtic players and supporters. It is not too often that you get to play against Real Madrid at home in the Champions League.

Of course, there is the feeling that the Hoops could have gotten more out of the game than they ultimately did but then, at the end of the day, this experience will only make the club and the players stronger and more prepared for the challenges that lie ahead in the Champions League this season.

This was a positive display for sure against one of the best teams on the planet and was close for a long time. In many ways, it just goes on to show how far this team has come in such a short time under the management of Ange Postecoglou.
