Luka Modric put in a brilliant display against Celtic at Parkhead and found the back of the net as well, as Real Madrid walked out with a 3-0 victory. The match was much closer than the scoreline suggests, especially before the Spaniards broke the deadlock. Many would argue that the Hoops could have been two or three goals up.

Callum McGregor was unlucky not to score against the European giants, as he struck the post. On the other hand, Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda could not make the best of golden opportunities to score.

Celtic were the far better team in the first 20 minutes of the game and pretty much went toe-to-toe with Real Madrid till they ended up conceding in the second half. And it is hard not to feel that they deserved more from this game than a 3-0 defeat.

Modric, who turns 37 this month, put in a classic performance. He also seems to have been impressed by the atmosphere at Celtic Park though. He tweeted out after the game:

Modric sends special message to Celtic fans after Real Madrid’s 3-0 win

While a defeat is always a hard pill to swallow, there are some positives for Celtic to take from this game as well.

Any points against Real Madrid would have always been viewed as a bonus and while the Hoops could have done it on the night, that should not leave them devastated.

They showed with the performance against Real Madrid that they are very capable of getting out of this group and qualifying for the knockout phases of the competition.

They will have to put up similar performances against the likes of RB Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk, while making sure that they make the most of the opportunities that they are presented on those nights. Let’s see how things go from here.
