Real Madrid might have won 3-0 at Parkhead but Celtic fans should be proud of the performance that their team put in on the day. They absolutely went toe-to-toe with the European champions and one could argue, should have been 2-0 or 3-0 up at one point of time, if they had taken their chances and had a bit of luck on their side.

Callum McGregor struck the post while Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda missed glorious chances to put Celtic ahead on the night.

Ultimately, Real Madrid grew in strength as the game wore on and after they got their opener, it did not take them too long to put three past the Hoops. A 3-0 scoreline does not properly reflect though, how close the two teams were for most of the game.

Two players stood out in particular for Celtic. The first one was captain McGregor. He was brilliant in the middle of the park and would have been in contention for the man of the match award if the scoreline had not been so one-sided or his effort had crept in. The second one is Giorgos Giakoumakis. The Greek striker might not have managed to find the back of the net but he did an incredible job considering the quality of opposition he was up against on the day, and deserves his plaudits.

There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed about, when it comes to losing to the European champions.

If anything, this goes on to show that Celtic are very capable of making it out of this group and making it into the knockout phases of the competition.

If they can produce a similar performance against Shakhtar Donetsk or RB Leipzig, and actually take their chances, one would expect them to come out with wins.
