Celtic have added to a number of positions across the pitch over the course of the summer. One area where they have not strengthened though is their defensive midfield. Aaron Mooy has been brought in but he is more of a deep-lying playmaker, while Sead Haksabanovic is an attacking midfielder.
That is a position where the Hoops might need to strengthen though. Nir Bitton left at the end of last season and it feels like there is no big physical presence in the middle of the park at the moment, who could act as an enforcer in the games against the big sides.
There is still some time left in the summer transfer window though and there have been hints that the Hoops could end up making moves on deadline day.
Interestingly, rumours have been doing the rounds today that the club are interested in signing Oliver Abildgaard. He currently plays for Rubin Kazan and has appeared for the Denmark national team as well.
Celtic linked with brilliant Danish defensive midfielder currently with Rubin Kazan
Abildgaard is not a name that most Celtic fans will be familiar with but he did put up some impressive numbers last season for Rubin Kazan.
He was one of the best when it comes to winning defensive duels and aerial duels, thanks to the fact that he stands at 6′ 4″. Abildgaard was not great when it comes to dribbling or pass completion but at the same time, Rubin Kazan were fighting relegation, so it is more than likely that they played most games on the backfoot. Overall, he looks like the kind of midfielder that Celtic are lacking at the moment.
Celtic have signed two players from Rubin Kazan in recent years. Carl Starfelt last summer and then Haksabanovic this time around. So that connection is already there and could make things easier.
Also, one has to remember that Rubin Kazan got relegated from the Russian top flight and as a result, they could very well have to let some players go, especially if clubs like Celtic come knocking.
