Last summer, Celtic were struggling to see a source of consistent goals in the team. The club were coming off of a disaster of a campaign and on top of that, Odsonne Edouard, who had been the Hoops’ primary goalscorer for years, was on his way out of Parkhead in order to join Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
On the other hand, the Hoops had a very different looking squad under a manager in Ange Postecoglou, who was managing his first top flight club in Europe. In terms of options up front, their only proven goalscorer in Scotland was Leigh Griffiths.
It is funny how quickly things can change in football. That picture seems like a distant memory these days, as Celtic at the moment have two brilliant goalscorers in Kyogo and Giorgos Giakoumakis, both of whom were signed last summer.
They face a different sort of dilemma this time around though, and that is giving enough playing time to both of them.
Kyogo seems to be the starting Celtic striker but Giakoumakis has continued to score
At the moment, Kyogo seems to be the first choice striker at Celtic and the Japanese striker has been in spectacular form for sure.
At the same time though, it would be a major mistake to overlook Giakoumakis, who has mostly been featured as an impact substitute and has continued to bang in the goals.
The Greek striker got a rare start against Ross County in the League Cup opener for Celtic and did not even take 30 minutes to find the back of the net. He is looking like a proper goal scoring machine at the moment.
That is a dilemma for Celtic though, as they will know that they need to give enough playing time to Giakoumakis as well.
He was linked with a move to the Premier League this summer as well but decided to stay on. But if he continues to be benched in favour of Kyogo, that situation might change in the future.
There is nothing to suggest that there is any issue right now, but Giakoumakis does deserve more minutes.
The ideal situation would be where both Giakoumakis and Kyogo start at the same time, but then, that could create an issue with the shape and structure of the team. It is an interesting situation and a welcome headache to have for Postecoglou for sure. As long as Celtic keep winning, any headache is a welcome one.
