Callum McGregor makes Champions League promise to new Celtic stars
Celtic will be in the Champions League this season after a long, long time. On the other hand, the Rangers have made their way into the competition as well by getting through the long and arduous qualification process. Thus, Europe’s elite competition will have both the Glasgow giants this time around. The last time that happened was in 2007/08.
It has been a while since Parkhead has witnessed a Champions League game and as a result, the atmosphere is expected to be electric when that famous anthem finally hits.
It will be very interesting to see if the club are able to make their mark on the competition or not. Celtic have actually struggled in Europe in recent times, in direct contrast to their Glasgow rivals, who somehow have taken their game to the next level on the continental stage.
Callum McGregor is expecting a special atmosphere when Celtic do make their return to the Champions League though and seems to be hyping it up to his new teammates as well. As reported by The Herald, the club captain said:
"“It will be special to hear that music again after a few years.“The noise level just goes up tenfold and it created an amazing atmosphere.“I’m just really looking forward to it. I’ve already told the a few of the guys what to expect. I’ve told them it’s at another level and they are excited about it.“When the games come around everyone will look forward to it and hopefully there will be some special nights.“I think there’s only a few of us left from the last time were in the Champions League. It’s a new group and we want to be successful in our own right.“We don’t want to dwell on teams from the past of anything like that, good or bad. We’ve got some nice experience in the squad as well, but it’s a new team and we want to develop and learn together, and create our own experiences.”"
McGregor makes Champions League promise to new Celtic stars
McGregor is one of the few players left in the squad who has played Champions League football for Celtic. For many, this will be their first taste of Europe’s elite competition and they will surely be hoping to make an impression with the eyes of the world watching.
Celtic have been placed in pot 4 and as a result, are surely going to come up against some big teams. Now, it remains to be seen if they can create some more special memories in Europe, like the win against FC Barcelona in 2012, which gets talked about to this day.
It is difficult to see them getting past the group stage, simply based on their recent record in Europe, but Ange Postecoglou’s side have already shown that they are capable of springing a surprise here and there. Can they pull one more rabbit out of the magic hat?
