It is no secret that John McGinn grew up as a huge Celtic fan and the club even came very close to signing him some years back. Unfortunately, they left things a bit too late and Aston Villa swooped in to complete a move for the midfielder. In hindsight, it has proven to be a big mistake for the Hoops, as he has developed into a brilliant player over the years in the Premier League and a regular in the Scotland national team.

One thing that seems to have never changed though is his love for Celtic, and McGinn has never been afraid to show it.

We saw the perfect example of it recently, as the 30th anniversary of the Premier League’s founding is coming up.

As reported by 67 Hail Hail, Aston Villa asked their squad for their favourite ever Premier League player on TikTok, and McGinn went on to name Henrik Larsson.

Larsson made a name for himself at Celtic and enjoyed quite a bit of success at FC Barcelona as well. He did spend a short spell on loan at Manchester United though.

That was enough for him to win a Premier League title, even though he only made 7 appearances in the competition during his time at Old Trafford. Yet, that is one more Premier League medal than Steven Gerrard, who is McGinn’s current manager at Aston Villa.

In the past, McGinn has named Larsson as his favourite player as well, and it is not hard to understand why, considering he grew up supporting Celtic. In fact, it would have been a surprise if it was somebody else.

It will be interesting to see how the season goes for Aston Villa this time around, with the club having struggled to find any consistency under the management of Gerrard, despite making some big signings.
