Harry Kewell joined Celtic as a first-team coach this summer in what was seen by many as Ange Postecoglou’s first major addition to his backroom team, since his arrival a year back. The manager had stuck with the likes of John Kennedy and Gavin Strachan last season, even when a lot of fans wanted the club to part ways with them following the disaster that was the 2020/21 campaign.

Postecoglou ended up guiding Celtic to a Premiership and League Cup double in his very first season at the club though. It is easy to forget, but many had questioned his credentials, when the Hoops had appointed him last summer.

Thus, in Postecoglou, Kewell has a brilliant manager to learn from. As a player, the Australian played at the very highest level for clubs like Liverpool, Leeds United and Galatasaray, even winning the Champions League. Now, as a coach, he must be looking to get to the highest level as well.

Kewell has admitted that he was not expecting to receive a message from Postecoglou this summer and it came out of the blue. As reported by Fox Sports, the Celtic coach said:

"“That was a big surprise.“I wasn’t expecting it. I was actually going in for another job at the time. And I thought the interview went really well, so I was waiting back for a call back from that. And let’s just say that happened on a Tuesday, I received the message from the manager (Ange) around about the Thursday or Friday. And within that message that he sent me was enough for me to forget about what I have been doing it and come and learn off one of the best. I thought it was too good of an opportunity to pass by.“And since I’ve been up there, it’s been fantastic – I’ve learned so much from him already. And I just want to take all that information and build on that and hopefully become a better coach.”"

Kewell has already managed quite a few teams himself, but not at the highest level, and he has not achieved much success either. Thus, working as part of Postecoglou’s coaching team could do him a world of good.

Postecoglou is arguably the greatest manager to ever come out of Australia, and he has a proven track record of success, for clubs across continents and for the national team as well.

It will be interesting to see how Celtic do in his second season in charge of the club. The consensus before his arrival was that his sides get better with time. Hopefully that will happen with the Bhoys as well, as they have a Scottish crown to defend and Champions League football to deal with.
